THE BAND

VEGA se formó en el verano de 2009 y lanzó su álbum debut Kiss of Life en 2010 con excelentes críticas en todos los ámbitos.

En 2011 VEGA decidió ir en busca de una compañía discográfica que compartíera su pasión por tratar de inyectar algo nuevo en el género rock, mientras que mantienen las raíces de los 80 y 90 que habían influído en ellos anteriormente.

VEGA formed in the summer of 2009 and released their debut album “Kiss of Life” in 2010 to rave reviews across the board.

In 2011 VEGA decided to go in search of a record company that shared their passion for trying to inject something new in to the rock genre, whilst still maintaining the 80’s/90’s roots that influenced them in the first place.

What the Hell! (2013)

Tras una larga búsqueda, finalmente VEGA consiguió un contrato mundial con Nine Tone/UNIVERSAL RECORDS, que lanza su segundo álbum en el otoño de 2012. El cantante Nick Workman no cuenta "Queríamos hacer un álbum en el que cada canción podría haber sido una sola, por lo que hemos estado pasando mucho tiempo con los ajustes finales de las canciones. Hicimos más o menos una maqueta con cada canció por lo menos, dos veces antes de que quedáramos satisfechos."

El nuevo disco cuenta con 13 temas que enganchan con "canciones de rock de estadio" que merecen ser tocadas lo suficientemente fuerte como para molestar a sus vecinos…

Como el roquero Journo de Dave Ling dijo "Estos chicos podrían tener un papel importante que desempeñar en el futuro"!

After a long search VEGA finally secured a worldwide deal with Nine Tone/UNIVERSAL RECORDS who will release their 2nd album in the autumn of 2012. Singer Nick Workman says “We wanted to write an album where every song could have been a single, so we have been spending a lot of time fine tuning the songs. We pretty much demoed each song twice before we were satisfied”. The new album will feature 13 tracks of hook laden “stadium rock songs” that deserve to be play loud enough to piss of your neighbours....

THE INTERVIEW

La música de Vega  suena como una bella mezcla del  Hard Rock con el Heavy Metal, sonidos de los 70 y los 80, una gran dosis de rabia y una gran pasión por la música, y la fuerza de Vega. ¿Cuáles son vuestras influencias musicales reales?

Todos aportamos diferentes gustos a la banda, Los gemelos James y Tom vienen de una formaci´n de rock melódico del estilo de Def Leppard, influencias de Bon Jovi y James, en particular, a causa de su amor por el sintetizador, le tira el pop de los años 80 y las bandas de de mezcla con sintetizadores como Erasure, Depeche Mode, etc. Nick tiene tendencia al rock más duro, también con un amor común por Def Leppard, peroo también 30 Seconds to Mars, Sixx: M, etc. Como baterista y amante del metal y el rock por igual, he estado en bandas más heavies en los últimos años a las que les gustaba el Black Metal y bandas como Rammstein, pero me gusta todas las cosas hard rock/metal, como The Scorpions, Queensryche, WASP y Metallica. Así que en general ¡tenemos diferentes gustos!

The music of Vega sound like a beautiful mix between Hard Rock with Heavy Metal, sounds of the 70 and 80, a large dose of rage and a great passion for music, and the punch of Vega. So, what are your real musical influences?

We all bring different tastes to the band, The twins James & Tom come form a very melodic rock back ground of Def Leppard, Bon Jovi influences and James in particular, because of his love of synth, brings 80’s pop and synth bands to the mix like Erasure, Depech Mode etc.  Nick has harder rock tendencies, again with a mutual love of Def Leppard, but also 30 Seconds to Mars, Sixx:AM etc.  As a drummer and lover of metal and rock alike, I’ve been in heavier bands over the years liking Black Metal and bands like Rammstein, but love all things hard rock/metal such as The Scorpions, Queensryche, WASP & Metallica.  So overall we have differing tastes!

¿Cuál es la diferencia entre la música de Vega  en la actualidad y su música hace 3 años?

VEGA está en evolución, y en cada canción que escribimos, estamos haciendo otro cambio. Seguro que nos aferramos a nuestros últimos gustos musicales, pero queremos tratar de amalgamar todas nuestras influencias y hacer ¡nuestro propio estilo de hard rock y rock melódico!

What is the difference between the music of Vega  today and your music 3 years ago?
VEGA is evolving and by each song that is written another change is being made.  Sure we hang on to our past musical loves, but we want to try and amalgamate all of our influences and make our own style of hard/melodic rock!

¿Por qué habéis titulado "What the Hell!" a vuestro  último álbum?

Hemos tenido una carrera hacia arriba y hacia abajo, como una montaña rusa, cosas que no siempre salen como las habíamos planeado, pero cuando se estaba escribiendo el álbum, a Nick se le ocurrió la canción 'What The Hell' y de inmediato pensamos que es lo que creemos, esto es lo que queremos decir a todos: “¡Qué demonios! ¡Somos VEGA y hacemos las cosas a nuestra manera!"

Why do you have titled “What the Hell!” your last LP?

We have had a bit of an up and down rollercoaster career with things not always going the way things we planned but by the time the album was written and Nick came up with the track ‘What The Hell!’ straight away we thought this is what we believe in, this is what we want to say to everyone,  “what the hell, we’re VEGA and we do things our way!!”

¿Qué vamos a encontrar diferente en éste CD de otros álbumes anteriores de Vega?

'What The Hell' es más duro que 'Kiss of Life', pero aún mantiene las melodías que la gente espera de nosotros. Volvemos al punto en estábamos en evolución tratando de encontrar nuestro propio sonido.

What's we will be finding different in this CD from other previous Vega’ albums?   

‘What The Hell!’ is harder than ‘Kiss of Life’ but still maintains the melodies people expect from us.  It goes back to the point I was making about us evolving, trying to find our own unique sound. 

Esta no es la primera vez que actúas en concierto en España. ¿Qué vas a ofrecer en vivo, y qué esperas del público español en tus conciertos?

Nos caracterizamos por hacer buenos espectáculos, nos enorgullecemos de ello. Todo es en directo, sin interpretaciones grabadas. Lo que ves, es lo que hay, y trabajamos duro para conseguirlo. La última vez que estuvimos en España tocando con Reckless Love, la gente fue increíble, todavía hablamos de aquel concierto, y de la energía y el amor que los españoles sienten por la música rock en directo. ¡Os saludamos! ¡Olé!

This is not your first time in concert around Spain. What are you going to offer in your live concerts and what do you hope from the Spanish people in your shows this time?

We are known for putting on good shows, we pride ourselves with this.  All our backing is live with no taped perfomances, what you see is what you get and we work hard to achieve this.  The last time we were in Spain playing with Reckless Love, the crowd were incredible, we still talk about that show and the energy and love the Spanish have for live rock music.  We salute you!!!  Ole!

¿Qué vais a ofrecer en vivo, y qué esperáis del público español en vuestros conciertos?

Como te he dicho en la anterior pregunta, VEGA es una banda a la que le gusta tocar en directo, nos encanta ver al público que disfruta y ¡que conozca nuestras canciones! Si conseguimos la mitad de la energía de los fans que la última vez que tocamos en Madrid ¡nos daremos por contentos!

What are you going to offer in your live concerts and what do you hope from the Spanish people in your shows this time?

Again, as mentioned in the last question, VEGA is a band that loves playing live, we love seeing the fans and it feels good that people know our songs!  If we get half the energy from the fans of the last time we played Madrid we’d be very happy!

¿Hay alguna sorpresa o planes alternativos para vuestra gira de 2014?, ¿algo que podáis anticiparnos? ¿Cuándo un nuevo disco?

En los conciertos puedes contar con un gran repertorio con canciones de 'Kiss of Life' y de 'What The Hell'. Por otro lado, fuera del escenario, estamos haciendo los preparativos para el tercer disco con la esperanza de editarlo en algún momento de este año.

Do you have any surprise or any plans alternative to this tour for 2014?  Can you anticipate anything to us? When a new disc?

You can expect a good mix of songs from ‘Kiss of Life’ and ‘What The Hell’ at the shows.  At the moment, behind the scenes, we are making preparations for the third record that we are hoping to release at some point this year.

¿Piensas que el mundo digital va a acabar con el mundo de la música tal y como lo conocemos hoy en día? Cuál es el futuro del músico?

Ciertamente creo que la industria de la música está cambiando rápidamente hasta el punto de que es difícil seguirle el ritmo. Internet es un amigo y un enemigo para las bandas. Por un lado, podemos llegar a todo el mundo y vernos a nosotros mismos con otros discos que se están descargando ilegalmente en detrimento del artista. Creo, sin embargo, que aún hay románticos a los que les gusta tener la música, ya sea en forma de CD o de vinilo, que parece estar volviendo. Las bandas tienen que mantener ese punto con las tendencias actuales e ir con lo que el mercado actual exige para hacer llegar la música a los fans.

Do you think the digital world will end with music as we know it today? What do you think is the future of music?

I certainly think that the music industry is changing rapidly to the point it is hard to keep up with.   The internet is a friend and a foe to bands.  On one hand we can reach out to the world and get ourselves out there, on the other albums are being illegally downloaded to the detriment of the artist.  I do think however that there are romantics that still like to hold music as in CD’s and vinyl is making a retro comeback.  Bands have to keep on point with the current trends and go with what the current market requires to get the music over to the fans.

¿Cuál es tu mejor recuerdo en el mundo de la música?

Siempre he estado rodeado de música ya que mi padre era un cantante/baterista, así que iba a verlo tocar muy a menudo, los fines de semana. Me acuerdo de mi primer CD (Dire Straits), mi primer concierto de A-Ha, y de ver algunas de mis bandas favoritas en los últimos años, pero estra con mi padre enseñándome a tocar la batería ¡es el mejor recuerdo!

What is your best memory about music?

I have always been surrounded in music as my father was a singer/drummer so I used to go and watch him play often at weekends.  I remember my first CD (Dire Straits), first gig A-Ha, and seeing some of my favourite bands over the years, but getting my father to teach me drums is the best memory!

¿Qué piensas de la situación económica actual en Europa y en el mundo en general?

La música y el entretenimiento deberían ser accesibles a las personas, hay difíccultades para las bandas para girar y tocar, pero insistimos en seguir adelante aún a pesar de las duras situaciones financieras.

Las grandes empresas y gobiernos corruptos tienen la culpa, pero ¡¡la música rock prevalecerán!!!

What do you think of the current economic situation in Europe, and in the world in general?

Music and entertainment should still be accessable to people, its difficult for bands to keep touring and playing but we insist on moving forward throughout tough financial situations.  Big corporations and corrupt governments are to blame, but rock music will prevail!!!!!

I’m currently reading the Arnold Schwarzenegger autobiography ‘Total Recall’. It’s a fascinating insight into how a guy made millions from nothing!

…Una película?:

Hace poco vi 'El lobo de Wall Street' y tengo que decir que es una de las mejores películas que he visto en mucho tiempo.

... A movie?:

I recently saw ‘The Wolf Of Wall Street’ and I have to say its one of the best films I’ve seen in a long time.

…Una canción?

The Enemy Inside del último álbum de Dream Theater. Siempre he sido un fan de DT desde Images and Words (uno de mis discos favoritos) y este ¡no me decepcionó!

... A song?:

Dream Theater – The Enemy Inside taken from their new album.  I’ve always been a fan of DT since Images and Words (one of my favourite albums) and this one doesn’t disappoint!

…Un album?

Satyricon de Satyricon. Esta banda hace Black Metal menos undreground.. Nunca un ábum de Black metal ¡fue tan melódico!.

... An album?:

Satyricon – Satyricon – This band have made Black Metal less underground.  Never has a black metal abum been so melodic!

….Un grupo o solista?:

Amaranthe. Increíble musicalidad, increíbles enlaces y melodías. ¡De obligada escucha para aquellos que todavía no lo hay hecho!

... A group or soloist?:
Amaranthe – incredible musicianship, amazing hooks and melodies. A must to anyone who hasn’t yet checked them out!
